Michael Stinson

Michael Stinson is a remarkable individual whose journey from a challenging childhood to a prominent role in Black Men Run is truly inspiring. Born on November 21, 1974, in Buffalo, New York, Michael experienced a nomadic early life due to his family’s frequent relocations. By the time he was in his late teens, his family had settled in Philadelphia, where he spent most of his formative years. After graduating high school in 1992, Michael faced significant financial and personal obstacles, including his family’s transition to Willow Grove and the absence of his father.
Despite these challenges, Michael’s resilience and determination shone through. When a potential military career was derailed by injury, he channeled his energy into the insurance industry, where he has built a successful career spanning underwriting, sales, agency operations, and claims adjusting.
Michael’s transformation began in 2011 after attending an insurance sales conference, where he realized he needed a change due to his weight of close to 330 pounds. What started as a simple regimen of walking and jogging evolved into a passionate pursuit of running. Frustrated by the lack of representation he saw in the running community, Michael discovered Black Men Run, a newly formed organization dedicated to increasing the presence of Black men in running. He joined the Philadelphia chapter and quickly rose to leadership roles, including Captain, Chief Operating Officer, National Captain, Director of Partnerships, and Philadelphia Chapter Head Captain.
In his current role as Co-Chief Executive Officer and chief advisor to the CEO of Black Men Run, Michael plays a crucial role in the organization’s growth and success. His efforts in onboarding new captains, establishing new chapters, and hosting events have been instrumental in expanding Black Men Run’s reach and impact.
Michael lives in New Jersey with his wife and adult son, while their daughter, a recent psychology graduate, resides in Pennsylvania. Outside of his professional and athletic pursuits, Michael enjoys music and can hold a tune on a good day, along with bodybuilding. His journey is a testament to his dedication, leadership, and passion for making a difference in both his personal life and the broader community.
